Private label clothing lets you launch a brand faster, with less upfront design investment, while still selling products under your own brand name. Here's how to do it successfully.

What Is Private Label Clothing?

With private label manufacturing, you select from a manufacturer's existing product line, add your branding (labels, tags, packaging), and sell under your own brand. The key difference from buying wholesale is that private label products are exclusive to your brand — they aren't sold to other retailers.

Step 1: Define Your Brand

Even with private label, your brand identity matters enormously. Define:

  • Target customer (age, lifestyle, income)
  • Brand personality (premium, playful, athletic, minimalist)
  • Price positioning (budget to luxury)
  • Visual identity (logo, colors, typography)
  • Step 2: Find Your Manufacturing Partner

The right manufacturer for private label should:

  • Have a catalog of designs that match your aesthetic
  • Offer your required MOQ (ideally 50-100 pieces)
  • Allow full brand customization (labels, tags, packaging)
  • Have demonstrated quality at your target price point
  • Be willing to sign an exclusivity agreement (no selling your private label designs to competitors)
  • Step 3: Select Your Products

For your first collection, choose 3-5 products you're most confident about. Evaluate:

    1. Browse the manufacturer's catalog

    2. Order samples of your shortlisted products

    3. Evaluate quality against your Standards

    4. Identify any modifications needed (color, minor design changes)

    5. Confirm pricing and MOQ for each product

    Step 4: Customize Your Branding

Labels: Your brand label is applied to the collar or waistband. Options include woven labels (premium, durable), print labels, or tear-away labels. Design your label with your logo, brand name, and care instructions.

Hang Tags: Custom designed paper or cardstock tags attached by string or safety pin. Include your logo, any brand messaging, pricing, and QR codes.

Packaging: Custom poly bags with your logo (printed or stickered). Branded tissue paper for premium packaging. Custom boxes for gifting.

Embroidery or Printing: Many manufacturers can add a small chest logo (embroidery or screen print) to differentiate the product further.

    Step 5: Plan Your Inventory

For a first launch with 5 products:

  • Order 50 units per product per colorway as a test
  • Limit to 2-3 colorways per product initially
  • Total: 500-750 units for a starter inventory
  • **Calculate your landed cost:**

  • Manufacturing cost per unit
  • Shipping cost per unit
  • Import duties per unit
  • Packaging cost per unit
  • = Total landed cost

    **Calculate your retail price:**

  • Target 60-70% gross margin for DTC
  • If landed cost = $20, price at $60-70
  • Step 6: Set Up E-Commerce

Shopify is the recommended platform for clothing brands. It integrates well with print-on-demand fulfillment, inventory management, and marketing tools.

    Essential pages:

  • Homepage with brand story
  • Product collection pages
  • Individual product pages with sizing guide
  • About page with brand story
  • Contact and FAQ page
  • Step 7: Launch and Marketing

    **Pre-launch (4-6 weeks before):**

  • Start posting on Instagram and TikTok
  • Build email waitlist
  • Identify 5-10 micro-influencers for gifting
  • Create product photography (professional flat lays and lifestyle shots)
  • **Launch week:**

  • Email announcement to waitlist
  • Social media posts across all channels
  • Influencer posts go live
  • Run a launch discount (10-15%) for urgency
  • Contact Mughal Apparel to browse our private label catalog and start your brand. MOQ 50 pieces, sample in 5-7 days.
