What is French terry fabric?

French terry is a knit fabric with looped pile on the inside face, commonly 280-500 GSM, used for hoodies and sweatshirts. Heavier compact-spun French terry is preferred for premium streetwear.

Detail

French terry is a knit fabric characterised by loops on the inside (back) face and a smooth jersey-like face on the outside. The loops trap air for warmth without bulk, making French terry the dominant fabric for hoodies, sweatshirts, joggers and athleisure. Weight ranges: 240-280 GSM lightweight (spring/summer hoodies), 280-360 GSM mid-weight (standard hoodies), 360-500 GSM heavyweight (premium streetwear, winter hoodies), 500+ GSM ultra-heavyweight (boutique premium). Fibre content: typically 100% cotton, or cotton blends with polyester (60/40 or 80/20 for shrinkage control and durability), or with elastane (1-3% for stretch). Compact-spun French terry uses a finer yarn for a smoother, denser hand-feel — preferred for premium streetwear brands. Brushed-back French terry has the loops brushed open into soft fleece on the inside, adding warmth and a plush feel.
