What is a Tech Pack? Complete Guide for Clothing Brand Founders

A tech pack is the blueprint for your garment. Without a proper tech pack, manufacturers cannot produce your design correctly. This guide explains what to include in every tech pack.

What is a Tech Pack? Complete Guide for Clothing Brand Founders

A tech pack (technical package) is a comprehensive document that communicates every detail of your garment to the manufacturer. Think of it as the architectural blueprint for your clothing — without one, even the most skilled factory cannot guarantee your product will match your vision.

Why Tech Packs Matter

Without a proper tech pack:

  • Samples come back wrong (wrong measurements, wrong construction)
  • Multiple rounds of revisions waste time and money
  • Manufacturers make assumptions that may not align with your vision
  • Disputes about quality are harder to resolve
  • With a proper tech pack:

  • First samples are much closer to your vision
  • Communication is precise and professional
  • Quality control has a clear reference point
  • Your intellectual property is documented
  • What a Tech Pack Contains

    1. Design Sketches (Technical Flats)

Flat technical illustrations showing front, back, and side views of the garment. These should be clean, accurate representations of the design — not lifestyle illustrations. Software: Adobe Illustrator (industry standard) or free alternatives like Canva or Sketch.

    2. Fabric Specifications

    **What to include:**

  • Fabric type (French Terry, nylon-spandex, etc.)
  • Composition (80% cotton, 20% polyester)
  • Weight (GSM)
  • Finish requirements (enzyme wash, silicone wash, etc.)
  • Performance requirements (moisture-wicking, anti-odor, etc.)
  • 3. Construction Details

    **What to include:**

  • Stitch type (flatlock, overlock, single-needle, twin-needle)
  • Seam allowances
  • Hem type and width
  • Pocket construction (if applicable)
  • Collar/cuff/hem construction
  • Hardware specifications (zipper type, brand, length)
  • 4. Size Chart (Graded Measurement Spec)

This is the most critical technical element. Your size chart should include:

  • All key measurement points (chest, waist, hip, inseam, sleeve length, etc.)
  • Measurements for each size (XS through 3XL, or your specific size range)
  • Tolerance allowances (e.g., ±1cm acceptable)
  • How measurements should be taken (lying flat, stretched, etc.)
  • 5. Color Specifications

    **What to include:**

  • Pantone TPX color codes for each colorway
  • Color placement map showing where each color is used
  • Contrast thread colors for stitching
  • Interlining/lining colors
  • 6. Print and Embroidery Artwork

  • High-resolution vector files (AI or PDF format)
  • Exact placement specifications (in centimeters from a reference point)
  • Print size specifications
  • Color separation files for screen printing
  • Embroidery digitized files (if embroidery)
  • 7. Labels and Trims

    **Labels:**

  • Brand label: content, placement
  • Care label: washing instructions, placement
  • Size label: format and placement
  • Country of origin label
  • **Trims:**

  • Zipper brand and specification (YKK preferred)
  • Button specifications
  • Drawstring/cord specifications
  • Elastic specifications
  • Hang tag specifications
  • 8. Packaging Specifications

  • Individual poly bag (size, type)
  • Retail hangtag attachment method
  • Master carton specifications (if applicable)
  • Fold and pack method
  • How to Create a Tech Pack

Option 1: Hire a Technical Designer

A freelance tech pack designer charges $100-500 per style. Find them on Upwork or specialized platforms like Techpacker.com.

Option 2: Use Tech Pack Software

Platforms like Techpacker, NuORDER, or Outline allow non-designers to create professional tech packs.

Option 3: Use the Manufacturer's Template

Many manufacturers, including Mughal Apparel, provide tech pack templates to guide new clients through the specification process.

    Common Tech Pack Mistakes

    1. Missing measurements: Leaving out key measurement points leads to incorrect sizing

    2. Low-resolution artwork: Manufacturers cannot execute print from blurry files

    3. No color codes: "Red" means different things to different people — always use Pantone codes

    4. Vague material descriptions: "Cotton feel" is not a specification; "85% cotton/15% polyester, 200 GSM" is

    5. No tolerance specifications: Define how much variation is acceptable before you receive the product
