Screen Printing vs Embroidery: Which Customization Method is Right for Your Brand?

Choosing between screen printing and embroidery impacts your brand's visual identity, durability, and cost. This guide compares every aspect of both techniques to help you decide.

Screen Printing vs Embroidery: Which is Right for Your Brand?

The two most popular customization methods for clothing brands — screen printing and embroidery — each have distinct advantages, limitations, and ideal use cases. Choosing the right method (or combination) significantly impacts your brand's visual identity, production timeline, and unit economics.

Screen Printing

How It Works

Screen printing pushes ink through a mesh screen onto the garment. Each color requires a separate screen. Most effective for flat, opaque designs on fabrics without excessive texture.

Best For

  • Bold, graphic designs with 1-6 spot colors
  • Large print areas (chest prints, back graphics)
  • Budget-conscious large production runs
  • Designs that require vivid color impact
  • Streetwear graphics, band merch, promotional t-shirts
  • Types of Screen Printing

Plastisol Ink: Oil-based, vibrant, sits on top of the fabric. Classic look. Long-lasting but can feel heavy.

Water-Based Ink: Soaks into the fabric, soft hand feel. More eco-friendly. Colors slightly less vibrant than plastisol.

Discharge Printing: Removes dye from fabric and replaces with ink color. Super-soft result. Only works on 100% cotton.

3D Puff Printing: Special ink that puffs up when heat-pressed. Creates dimensional effect popular in streetwear.

    Advantages

  • Lower cost per unit for large runs
  • Vibrant, bold color results
  • Suitable for complex photographic designs (with halftone technique)
  • Works on most fabric types
  • Limitations

  • Setup cost per color (new screens)
  • Not cost-effective for 1-2 piece runs
  • Limited on very textured fabrics
  • Colors may be limited to color separations
  • Pricing

    | Quantity | 1-color | 3-color | 6-color |

    |----------|---------|---------|--------|

    | 50 pcs | +$3-5/pc | +$5-8/pc | +$8-12/pc |

    | 200 pcs | +$2-3/pc | +$3-5/pc | +$5-8/pc |

    | 500+ pcs | +$1-2/pc | +$2-3/pc | +$3-5/pc |

    Embroidery

    How It Works

Embroidery uses a specialized machine to stitch thread directly into the fabric following a digitized design file. The design is converted into stitch data by a process called digitizing.

    Best For

  • Logos and text-based designs
  • Premium, tactile brand identity
  • Caps, polo shirts, jackets
  • Uniform and corporate apparel
  • Products where durability is paramount
  • Types of Embroidery

Standard Embroidery: Flat stitching, most common.

3D Embroidery: Foam placed under stitching creates a 3-dimensional, raised logo effect. Popular for headwear.

Chenille Embroidery: Thick, fuzzy texture associated with varsity aesthetics.

Patch Embroidery: Design embroidered onto separate fabric and then attached to the garment.

    Advantages

  • Premium, tactile finish
  • Extremely durable — outlasts print
  • Professional, high-value brand perception
  • Works on all fabric types including textured
  • Design doesn't fade
  • Limitations

  • Not suitable for photographic or gradient designs
  • Higher per-unit cost than screen printing
  • Design complexity limited by stitch count
  • Not suitable for very large print areas
  • Pricing

    | Stitch Count | Per Unit |

    |-------------|----------|

    | Under 5,000 (small logo) | +$2-4 |

    | 5,000-10,000 (medium logo) | +$4-7 |

    | 10,000-20,000 (large logo) | +$7-12 |

    | 20,000+ (complex design) | +$12-20 |
