Custom Swimwear Manufacturing: Guide to Competitive and Fashion Swimwear

Custom swimwear requires specialized fabrics and construction. This guide covers competitive swimwear, fashion swimwear, and beachwear manufacturing for brands and sports teams.

Custom Swimwear Manufacturing: Complete Guide

The global swimwear market is projected to reach $30 billion by 2026, driven by athleisure trends and growing participation in aquatic sports. Custom swimwear manufacturing requires specialized fabrics, construction techniques, and an understanding of both fashion and performance requirements.

Swimwear Categories

Competitive Swimwear

Used for racing and competitive swimming. Prioritizes hydrodynamics and performance:

  • Racing Suits: Full-body or partial coverage. Very tight compression. FINA-approved fabrics required for competition.
  • Swim Shorts: Knee-length or mid-thigh. Used for training and open water.
  • Jammers: Tight-fitting shorts for male competitive swimmers.
  • Sports Swimsuits: One-piece for female competitive swimmers.
  • Fashion/Leisure Swimwear

  • Bikinis: Two-piece for women. Triangle, balconette, bandeau styles.
  • One-Piece Swimsuits: Cut-out designs, high-cut legs, off-shoulder styles.
  • Boardshorts: Loose-fit shorts for male surfers and beach-goers.
  • Rash Guards: UPF 50+ protection tops for water sports.
  • Wetsuits: Neoprene suits for cold-water swimming and surfing.
  • Swimwear Fabrics

    Nylon-Spandex (Polyamide-Elastane)

The gold standard for performance and fashion swimwear:

  • 80/20 Nylon-Spandex: Most common. Excellent stretch recovery, soft feel, chlorine-resistant.
  • 78/22 Nylon-Spandex: Slightly higher stretch, used for competition cuts.
  • Weight: 170-220 GSM
  • Properties: Chlorine-resistant, UV-resistant, colorfast, fast-drying
  • Polyester-Spandex

    More affordable option:

  • 88/12 Polyester-Spandex: Good stretch, colorfast, quick-dry.
  • Weight: 170-200 GSM
  • Best for: Boardshorts lining, fashion bikinis, beachwear
  • ECONYL (Recycled Nylon)

Sustainable option made from regenerated fishing nets and nylon waste:

  • Same performance as virgin nylon
  • Growing demand from eco-conscious brands
  • Premium price point but strong brand story
  • Key Construction Requirements

Flatlock Seams: All seams should be flat-locked to prevent chafing during swimming. Traditional overlock seams are unacceptable for quality swimwear.

Chlorine Resistance: The fabric and dyes must withstand repeated chlorine exposure. Request chlorine resistance test results from your manufacturer.

UV Protection: UPF 50+ is a selling point for fashion swimwear. Nylon-spandex naturally provides UPF 50+ when properly constructed.

Lining: Most women's swimwear requires a sewn-in lining for opacity. Should be light (50-80 GSM) to avoid adding bulk.

Elastic: Swimwear elastic must be chlorine-resistant. Cheap elastic deteriorates quickly in pool water.

    Customization Options

Sublimation Printing: All-over designs on polyester-spandex. Bright, colorfast results. Most popular for boardshorts and fashion bikinis.

Screen Printing: For graphic elements on boardshorts panels. PVC inks are best for water resistance.

Tie-Dye/Hand Dye: Premium fashion effect. Each piece unique.

Laser Cutting: Precise cut-outs and patterns in the fabric. Premium fashion swimwear technique.

Custom Labels: Woven labels or heat-transfer labels on waistband. Custom back-neck branding.

    Sizing Standards

Swimsuits should be sized to fit when worn, not when laid flat. Typical allowances:

  • Women's sizing: XS (US 0-2), S (US 4-6), M (US 8-10), L (US 12-14), XL (US 16-18)
  • Men's sizing: XS (28-30" waist), S (30-32"), M (32-34"), L (34-36"), XL (36-38")
