Applique on hoodies is a decoration technique that's distinct from embroidery or screen print — fabric pieces (often felt, twill, or contrasting jersey) are cut into shapes, layered onto the hoodie, then sewn down with decorative stitching around the edges. The result is dimensional, textured decoration that catches light differently than flat printing or surface embroidery. Applique works particularly well on heavyweight hoodie construction (380-500 GSM French terry or fleece) where the fabric weight supports the additional applique fabric without distorting drape. On lighter hoodies (280 GSM), applique can cause fabric sag at decoration points. Our applique hoodie production uses two construction approaches: Felt applique: Wool felt or acrylic felt pieces (popular for varsity letterman-jacket aesthetic). Pieces cut by die-cutter or laser, then satin-stitched around perimeter. Multi-layer applique (felt + embroidered details) creates dimensional designs. Common for college merchandise and heritage streetwear. Twill applique: Cotton twill or polyester twill fabric pieces. More refined surface than felt. Used for sports team chest crests and brand chest patches. Often combined with embroidery to add lettering or detail work over the twill applique base. Chenille applique: Yarn-loop pile fabric (like terry-cloth or sweater knit) used for letterman-style applied patches. Multi-color chenille with merrow-edge finishing. The most expensive applique technique but produces premium varsity aesthetic. Production lead time for applique: 12–20 additional production days beyond standard hoodie cycle.
