All-Over Sublimation Printing: Complete Guide
Sublimation printing is the dominant technology for custom sportswear, team kits, and performance apparel. Its ability to produce vibrant, unlimited-color prints that don't add texture or weight to the fabric has made it the standard for professional athletic gear.
How Sublimation Printing Works
Sublimation is a chemical process where special dye is transferred into fabric using heat and pressure:
1. Design is printed in reverse onto sublimation transfer paper using special dye-based inks
2. The paper is placed against the fabric
3. A heat press applies 380-400°F (190-205°C) for 30-60 seconds
4. The dye converts from solid to gas (sublimation) and bonds with the polyester fibers
5. When cooled, the dye returns to solid state permanently embedded in the fabric
Result: The design becomes part of the fabric — it can't peel, crack, or fade like screen printing.
Fabric Requirements
Sublimation only works on synthetic materials:
100% Polyester: Perfect sublimation, most vibrant colors. Best for jerseys and performance tops.
Polyester-Spandex (85%+ Polyester): Excellent results. Slight softening of colors due to spandex. Used for compression shorts and leggings.
Natural Fabrics (Cotton, etc.): Does NOT work. The dye cannot bond with natural fibers.
Light Colors Only: Sublimation is a dye process — it cannot cover dark fabrics. Works best on white or very light-colored base fabrics.

Design Tips
Cut-and-Sew Sublimation Process
For custom-fit sportswear, the sublimation and cutting process follows this sequence:
1. Design Stage: Full garment pattern flat-lay design showing all panels
2. Printing: Design printed onto sublimation paper using large-format printer
3. Transfer: Paper transferred to fabric on heat press calendar
4. Cutting: Printed fabric cut according to pattern pieces
5. Sewing: Garment assembled with flatlock or overlock stitching
6. Finishing: Labels attached, quality inspection, packing
Applications for Sublimation
Sports Jerseys: Football, basketball, cricket, cycling, rugby kits. Professional finish at competitive prices.
MMA/Combat Sports: Fight shorts, rash guards, competition gear.
Gym Wear: Leggings, shorts, tanks (polyester-spandex).
Team Kits: School sports, amateur sports clubs, corporate teams.
Swimming: Competitive swimwear, boardshorts.
Motor Sports: Racing suits, karting gear, riding jerseys.
