MOQ Explained: Complete Guide to Minimum Order Quantities for Clothing Brands

Minimum Order Quantities (MOQ) are one of the most important factors in clothing manufacturing. This guide explains how MOQs work, how to negotiate them, and which manufacturers offer the lowest MOQs.

MOQ Explained: Complete Guide for Clothing Brands

Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ) is the smallest number of units a manufacturer will produce in a single order. Understanding how MOQs work — and how to navigate them — is essential knowledge for every clothing brand.

Why Do MOQs Exist?

Manufacturers set MOQs because:

1. Setup costs: Creating patterns, cutting guides, and screen plates has fixed costs

2. Fabric purchasing: Minimum fabric rolls must be purchased per color

3. Machine efficiency: Running a production line for 10 pieces is inefficient

4. Profitability: Very small orders often cost more to produce than they earn

Types of MOQs

Per Style

'50 pieces per style' means 50 of any style — you can mix colors.

Per Color

'50 pieces per color' is more restrictive — 50 of each color of each style. A 3-color hoodie would require 150 pieces minimum.

Per Fabric

'50 pieces per fabric' means 50 pieces using each fabric. Rarely stated this way but sometimes implied.

Total Order MOQ

Some manufacturers set a minimum total order value or total unit count rather than per-style MOQs.

MOQ by Manufacturer Type

| Manufacturer Type | Typical MOQ | Best For |

|-------------------|-------------|----------|

| Pakistani (Sialkot) | 50-200 pcs/style | Startups, growing brands |

| Chinese factory (large) | 300-2000 pcs/style | Scaled brands |

| Chinese factory (small) | 100-500 pcs/style | Mid-size brands |

| Bangladesh | 500-2000 pcs/style | High-volume basics |

| Portugal/Turkey | 50-500 pcs/style | Premium, near-shore |

| Domestic (USA/UK) | 12-100 pcs | Very small runs |

How to Work With Low MOQs

Strategy 1: Focus

Limit your first collection to 3-5 products. Don't spread budget across too many styles.

Strategy 2: Consolidate Colors

Rather than 5 styles × 5 colors = 25 SKUs, start with 5 styles × 2 colors = 10 SKUs. Much more manageable inventory.

Strategy 3: Hero Product

Put 60% of your initial production budget into your one strongest product. Smaller quantities on secondary products.

Strategy 4: Pre-orders

Launch with a pre-order campaign. Collect orders, then place your bulk production once you've confirmed demand.

Negotiating MOQs

**What factories consider:**

  • Your order total (higher value = more flexibility)
  • Repeat business potential
  • Product complexity (simpler = lower MOQ)
  • Relationship history
  • **Negotiation approaches:**

  • 'Can we start at 50 pieces and increase to 200 on reorder?'
  • 'If we run fewer colorways, can we reduce the MOQ?'
  • 'We have 3 styles — can we combine for a total of 150 pieces across them?'
  • The Cost of Low MOQ

Lower MOQ usually means higher per-unit cost. The price difference can be significant:

    | Quantity | Price per Hoodie |

    |----------|-----------------|

    | 50 pcs | $22-28 |

    | 100 pcs | $18-24 |

    | 500 pcs | $14-18 |

    | 1000+ pcs | $10-15 |

This is the cost of market validation. Higher per-unit cost at low MOQ is the price of testing your market with minimal inventory risk.
